What a recall costs an importer
RappelConso is the French government’s official product recall site, run by the DGCCRF, the consumer protection authority. When a product is recalled, the company that placed it on the market runs the recall: informing customers, taking back or refunding the products, destroying the stock. Under EU law, the importer is responsible for the safety of the products it places on the market, even if it does not make them.
RappelConso does not state where products were made. For China, the best indication comes from Safety Gate, the EU alert system: the share of alerts notified by France that concern products made in China is shown in the key figures above.
The most frequent hazards, small parts that come loose, banned chemicals, overheating and electric shock, can be checked before the goods leave: lab testing against the applicable standards, then a pre-shipment inspection on an AQL sample.
